17 Former Colombian Soldiers

Colombia’s police chief, Police General Jorge Luis Vargas, said 17 Colombians “may have joined the Colombian national army,” which left the military between 2018 and 2020.

Vargas further said that of the 17 former soldiers, two of them died at the hands of the Haitian police and 15 are now being held.

However, local newspaper El Tiempo said one of those arrested was identified as Manuel Antonio Grosso Guarin, 40, who is said to be one of Colombia’s most experienced soldiers.

Vargas revealed that the two Colombian suspects had flown from Bogota to Panama on May 6 and from there continued on to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, where they stayed four days before flying to Haiti.

The other Colombian suspects are known to have flown to Panama first before connecting to the Dominican Republic on June 4, and continuing on to Port-au-Prince, via the resort city of Punta Cana which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.

Colombian authorities said they had information about the involvement of four companies in the assassination of the Haitian president, but they gave no further details.

The President of Colombia, Ivan Duque, announced in a statement that the Head of the Colombian Intelligence Directorate and the Director of Intelligence at the Colombian National Police would be sent to Haiti with Interpol to assist with the investigation.
