Haiti is being detained in connection with the assassination of its president

Jamaican authorities have announced the arrest of former Haitian senator Jean-Joel Joseph, who is suspected of involvement in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenell Moiz last July.

The Jamaican authorities said Joseph Joseph, a Haitian citizen, and three members of his family had been detained for violating immigration rules.

The statement added that contacts with the Haitian authorities revealed that Joseph had been announced in a search of the country’s assassination on July 7 last year.

The arrest warrant for Joseph was issued immediately after the assassination of the Haitian president, who was described by local authorities as “armed and dangerous.” Joseph was an opposition senator and a sharp critic of President Moiza.

The unpopular Moizu, who has been in office since 2017, was shot dead by armed intruders at his home. Moiza’s wife was seriously injured in the attack. More than 20 people took part in the attack on the presidential residence.

More than 40 people have been arrested so far in connection with the Moiza murder investigation, including 18 Colombian citizens and two US citizens of Haitian origin, but the circumstances of the assassination, in particular the perpetrator, are unclear.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henri, who took power in the country after the president’s assassination, said this month that an assassination attempt was also being made against him during a national holiday on January 1.

Mario Palasios, a 43-year-old retired Colombian soldier, has been charged with “participating in a plan to abduct or kill Haiti’s president” this month.

The U.S. prosecutor’s office said it was originally planned to kidnap Moiz, but “as a result, his killing was planned.”-

On Thursday, the U.S. Congress instructed the State Department to prepare a detailed report on Moiza’s murder within six months.
