Common Post-Shower Hair Mistakes Can Cause Permanent Damage, Expert Warns
London, UK – Unconscious errors made promptly after showering can inflict lasting damage on hair, according to hair specialist Dr. Roshan Vara. While regular haircuts and nourishing masks are common practice, teh critical period directly following washing is often overlooked.
Dr. Vara cautioned against aggressive brushing of wet hair in an interview with The Sun, explaining that wet hair’s altered physical structure makes it considerably more vulnerable to mechanical stress. He recommends using a wide-toothed comb, starting at the tips and working upwards, avoiding the roots while the hair is still damp to minimize breakage.
Furthermore, using a hairdryer or straightener on soaking wet hair can cause a “crack effect” as water is rapidly removed from the hair shaft, damaging the outer protective layer. this weakens the hair structure and can contribute to increased hair loss. The heat creates a steam effect inside the hair, potentially causing fibers to burst.
To protect hair, Dr. Vara advises gently blotting excess water with a towel and allowing a short air-drying period before using styling devices. He also notes that factors like stress, poor nutrition, hormonal fluctuations, and chemical treatments like bleaching and coloring contribute to hair damage.
