Guterres says countries should do “everything in their power” to prevent the spread of Covid-19 – News

“Countries must do everything in their power to respond to the new coronavirus strain, Covid-19,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during a visit to the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) , in Geneva, Switzerland.

Guterres stressed that the new coronavirus “can be contained and vanquished”, but if there are no efforts by the international community to contain the epidemic, “the situation could have serious consequences and affect the health and economy” worldwide.

The UN leader added that divesting in WHO “is not a smart issue”, since this organization “just wants to help prevent” this outbreak from turning into a “global nightmare”.

That is why António Guterres called for countries to “do everything to finance” the World Health Organization.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations also stressed the “importance of non-discrimination, respect for human rights and non-stigmatization” due to the epidemic.

The Covid-19 outbreak, which began in China at the end of the year, has already killed 2,628 people and infected more than 79,000, according to health officials in some 30 affected countries.

In addition to 2,592 deaths in mainland China, fatalities are reported in Iran, South Korea, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, France and Taiwan.

In Portugal, there have already been 14 suspected cases, which were negative after analysis.

A Portuguese crew member from a cruise ship that is quarantined in the port of Yokohama, Japan, has been declared infected and will be transferred to a Japanese hospital on Tuesday.

The World Health Organization declared the Covid-19 outbreak as an international public health emergency and on Monday warned of a possible pandemic, considering the sudden increase in cases in Italy, South Korea and Iran as very worrying.
