Gunfight Erupts at Crown Heights Deli and Grill, Injuring Teenagers

The Crown Heights Wise Deli and Grill was packed, doors wide open, as one worker always recounted, when a gunfight suddenly broke out Wednesday morning.

“I heard about five shots, yes, this morning,” says Julia Núñez, a resident of the neighborhood.

Neighbors from other nearby buildings said they heard between 5 and 6 shots, which came from the outside in, hitting two teenagers who were making a purchase right in front of the counter of the store, which is located on the corner of Franklin Avenue and Eastern Parkway. .

According to the police, a 16-year-old girl received a bullet wound to her right leg, while a 17-year-old boy was injured in his left arm.

Additionally, a 15-year-old girl injured her ankle when she ran out of fear. All three were taken to a nearby hospital and are out of danger.

The authorities report that, apparently, the shots were not directed at them.

For his part, and according to Adna Ahmed, one of the warehouse workers, the place was full of children and young people who, as usual, were buying sandwiches for breakfast.

At the business counter you can see where the bullets entered and the glass was completely destroyed.

“This block sometimes gets hot, yes, sometimes it gets hot because I sometimes come to Coffee Land to have a coffee and sometimes it gets very hot and I walk fast because it scares me”, explains Gloria Erol, who frequents the neighborhood.

Rocío Valerio, also a neighbor of the neighborhood says:

“I think that’s what happens when we don’t put resources into the social network that we need, like after-school programs for kids.”

According to Hank Sheinkopf, an agent for the school security union, the shooting occurred just three blocks from WEB DuBois School, where students had to remain locked up for security.

According to police, the suspects in this case are two young men, possibly teenagers, one wearing a red hood and the other a black hood.

The community expressed being very concerned, since this is a very crowded corner, especially by children and young people, and next to the store is the Franklin Avenue train station.
