Attacked along with several of its leaders in early August by New York State Attorney Letitia James, the organization counter-attacked in mid-January by declaring bankruptcy in federal court in Dallas.

Bankruptcy in New York, move to Texas

The maneuver aimed to protect itself from this procedure, by moving its headquarters to Texas, a state much more favorable to personal weapons than New York.

But on Thursday, Judge Joel Cohen dismissed the NRA’s arguments and confirmed the continuation of New York proceedings, according to a statement from prosecutor James. The judge’s order was not yet on file as of Thursday afternoon.

The New York prosecutor is primarily targeting the association’s number one, executive vice-president Wayne LaPierre, at its head since 1991.

Safari, private jet and cruise

The leader is accused of corruption and embezzlement, with the complicity of his close collaborators.

He would have used the private jet of the NRA for personal purposes or benefited from benefits in kind (safari or cruise) offered by service providers of the organization.

Letitia James is also calling for the dissolution of the lobby, which has distorted its statutes.

“The NRA does not dictate whether and where it should answer for its management,” the New York state attorney said in the statement.

“We thank the court for allowing this process to continue and we look forward to holding the NRA to account,” she added.

Asked by AFP, lawyers for the NRA did not immediately follow up.
