Guinea: towards the reopening of borders… | Africa Guinea

CONAKRY- Are we moving towards the reopening of the air, sea and land borders closed on March 26th? Everything suggests it. While the containment measures linked to the Covid-19 pandemic are gradually being eased in the ECOWAS countries, the transport ministers of the subregional organization have proposed a timetable for the reopening of the borders.

The Ministerial Coordination Committee for Transport, Logistics and Trade of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held meetings on June 12 and 16, 2020 by video conference as part of the fight against coronavirus and actions to be taken to reopen the borders between member states.

The main purpose of these meetings was to discuss and agree on a well-coordinated regional response for the opening of a cross-border transport and trade corridor for the immediate movement of humanitarian medical supplies and equipment, essential and people in the fight against the pandemic in the region. Secondly, the gradual and coordinated opening of land, air and sea borders in order to support the process of relaunching cross-border economic activities.

During these virtual meetings, the ministers made recommendations to the Heads of State and Governments of ECOWAS. In an eight (8) page document that we consulted, the participants developed nine (9) recommendations, including the opening of the land and air borders according to a schedule divided into three (3) phases.

The first phase consists of opening domestic airports and the lifting of restrictions on ground transportation within ECOWAS member states in late June 2020.

The second phase concerns the opening of land, sea and air borders between the ECOWAS States in order to allow the free movement of people and goods (…) from July 15 onwards.

The third phase relates to the opening of air and land borders to other countries that do not have a very high level of contamination of Covid-19 from the second half of July 2020 (July 31 at the latest).
