Greenpeace Magazine | Azerbaijan open to Russian mediation in border regulation

Baku / Yerevan (dpa) – The South Caucasus Republic of Azerbaijan has shown itself to be open to a possible Russian mediation in establishing a demarcation line with the warring neighbor Armenia. “Azerbaijan (…) is ready to resolve the issue of the border line with Armenia constructively,” said Prime Minister Ali Azadov at a meeting with other heads of government of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), according to a statement on Saturday.

In this context, they support a proposal by Russia to set up a trilateral commission. Armenia’s incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had previously spoken out in favor of a withdrawal of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops and the deployment of international observers.

Since the recent war in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict region, there have been repeated tensions in the border area. In the war between September 27 and November 9, 2020 for Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan reclaimed large parts of the territory it had lost in the early 1990s. More than 6,000 people died in the fighting. Russia had brokered a ceasefire between the two warring countries.

Most recently, the arrest of six Armenian soldiers by Azerbaijani security forces caused tensions. Azerbaijan said the men wanted to cross the border towards the Kelbajar area, Armenia denies this.
