Greenpeace activists are protesting against lignite mining near churches in Germany

Among the churches where these campaigns are held are Cologne Cathedral, Münster Lambert Church, Dresden Church of the Virgin Mary (Frauenkirche) and Aachen Cathedral.

The venues of the campaign near the churches were chosen to remind of Imerata Cathedral, which was demolished in 2018 to give way to a lignite quarry.

Greenpeace calls for the abandonment of lignite as soon as possible, noting that the current government policy is “cruel”.

More than 45,000 people have been forced to relocate due to lignite mined in the Rhineland. More than 100 towns and villages have been destroyed, as well as centuries-old churches and cultural monuments.
