On Thursday, aldermen Philip Broeksma and Glimina Chakor opened the new green roof of the municipal office at Gedempte Zuiderdiep.

The green roof ensures that rainwater does not end up directly in the sewer, it insulates better and is good for biodiversity. The building is located in the heart of the paved city center, in a place where there has been flooding during heavy rainfall for years.

Subsidy for green roofs

Private individuals, companies, institutions, schools and housing foundations can apply for a subsidy for green roofs. The subsidy amount is calculated per m2 of roof surface.

The advantages of installing a green roof include a better drainage of rainwater, which means that the sewer is less burdened, it insulates and provides cooling on hot days.

Green roofs also have a longer lifespan. According to the municipality, they generally last twice as long as a regular roof, because sunlight does not affect the roof.

With this subsidy, 7000 m2 of green roof was installed in the municipality of Groningen this year.

With a new green roof on the building of the municipality of Groningen on Gedempte Zuiderdiep, a contribution is made to making the city center climate-proof.

“The green roof on the Zuiderdiep is a good example of how you can become more sustainable, even in urban areas. People can also do this themselves. Subsidies are available from the municipality for private individuals or companies who want to construct a green roof, ”said Alderman for Green and Climate Adaptation Glimina Chakor.
