green light for the reimbursement by the Social Security Fund of a first surgical mask

The French National Authority for Health (HAS) has given an opinion favorable to the reimbursement, within the framework of the Covid-19 epidemic, of a surgical mask manufactured by the Majorelle laboratory, which could thus become the first model supported by health insurance.

Seized on May 14 of this request for reimbursement on medical prescription, the HAS gave the green light Tuesday. The medical device evaluation committee has indeed “recommended (s) that the Assanis surgical mask be supported for patients with Covid-19 and patients at high risk of developing a serious form of infection” with coronavirus .

Set the price

Majorelle welcomed in a press release “this decision which will make it possible to strengthen access to masks conforming to European standards for the most fragile and destitute”.
The laboratory “is now negotiating with the Economic Committee for Health Products (CEPS) in order to obtain a selling price” for its product.

Once its price has been set, this surgical mask “will be the first (to be) entered on the list of reimbursable products and services”, indicated the Assurance maladie. Available over the counter in shops and pharmacies, surgical masks cannot be sold for more than 95 cents per unit since May 2.

In addition, since May 11, people tested positive for Covid-19 and their “contacts” can be prescribed 14 masks per week, delivered to pharmacies without advance payment, “people with very high medical risk” having for their share right to 10 masks per week.
