A project imagined by the architect of the High Line will see the light of day on the banks of the Hudson, in the Meatpacking District. Work should start in the spring.
Has Paris Plages been emulated? In New York, Manhattan Island is preparing to welcome its first public beach, on the banks of the Hudson. The Hudson River Park Trust has just validated the development project for the Gansevoort Peninsula Park, in the trendy Meatpacking district. The jetty, which will span 2.2 hectares in Hudson River Park, is expected to be completed in spring 2023.
The space will include a sandy beach with a landing stage for kayaks, a sports field, a walk along a swampy strip, a grassy area with lounge chairs and picnic tables by the water. An imposing work of art by David Hammons will also be installed in the south of the peninsula by the Whitney Museum of American Art.

“The Gansevoort Peninsula will be a spectacular public space for all New Yorkers, whether they are enjoying Manhattan’s first public beach, playing ball or gazing at the salt marsh.”, said the President of the Hudson River Park Trust, Madelyn Wils.
Construction on the $ 70 million project is set to begin in the spring between Gansevoort Street and Little West 12th Street. At the helm, the architectural firm James Corner Field Operations, well known in New York for having created the High Line aerial pedestrian promenade and the Domino Park in Brooklyn.
This park is part of a larger plan of more than a billion dollars to cover the entire Hudson River Park, which runs along the river for more than seven kilometers. With, in particular, the opening of Pier 26 last September and that, scheduled for spring, of the futuristic park on stilts Little Island.
