Green Comet and Alpha Centaurid Meteor Shower Color the February Astronomical Phenomena

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Sky events in February 2023 are colored by apparitions comet green or C/2022 E3 (ZTF) and Alpha Centaurid meteor shower. According to astronomers from Southern Sky Community, Avivah Yamani, the comet can be observed until the end of February. “In the north direction, until the end of the month the brightness will dim,” he said, Wednesday 1 February 2023.

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) on February 1, for example, rises at 17.52 WIB and sets early at 02.31 WIB. Avivah said the comet can be found in the constellation Camelopardalis. At another time in the constellations Auriga and Taurus.

Previously, according to Avivah, the comet, which appears green in color, was captured by a team of observers at the Sumatran Institute of Technology Astronomy Observatory (Itera) with a robotic telescope from January 13-16 2023.

In addition, there is the Alpha Centaurid meteor shower which takes place from January 28 to February 21 2023. From the Langit Selatan website, the meteor shower will start to appear from 21.46 WIB. Its position is in the southeast, near the beta star Centauri. At its peak time, February 8, the number of meteors ranges from 8 to 25 meteors per hour with a speed of 56 kilometers per second.

The position of the moon on February 4 is at its furthest point from the earth or apogee at 406,476 kilometers. Because of this, the moon will appear seven times smaller and about 15 percent dimmer than average brightness. While the full moon will appear on February 6 from sunset to dawn.

The moon will again reach its closest point to the earth or perigee on February 19 at a distance of 358,267 kilometers. After that, a new moon or new moon occurs on February 20.
