Greek crime reporter murdered at home

A well-known crime journalist has been murdered in Greece. He was shot by two men on a scooter near his home in Athens. The police have found at least seventeen bullet casings.

George Karaivaz worked for the commercial channel Star TV, where he reported on lawsuits and police cases, among other things. The Greek journalists’ union is said to be in shock. A spokesman calls on the government to find and arrest the perpetrators. Journalists will not give way to these types of criminal practices, the union says.

Karaivaz is not the first journalist to be murdered in Greece. In 2010 an investigative reporter was shot. Responsibility for that murder was claimed by a far-left terrorist organization.

According to the Greek police, it appears that the liquidation has now been carefully planned in Athens. No announcements have yet been made about a motive. Ballistic research is now taking place; for example whether the weapon is known to the police. Witnesses are also heard.
