France and Greece have signed a defense and security agreement worth about 3 billion euros, which includes the purchase of three ships by Greece.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic in a letter criticized Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos, who, speaking on the private television Skye on Thursday evening, said that according to the Greco-French agreement “one country will help another by military means if the need arises.” In response to a question about whether mutual defense assistance also includes sea and land, Panagiotopoulos said it would be valid for “the entire sovereign territory” of Greece.
Bilgic, in turn, denounced what he called “maximalist Greek maritime jurisdiction and airspace claims,” and described the France-Greece agreement as a bilateral military alliance formed against fellow NATO member Turkey, “damaging the NATO alliance.”
“Greece’s policy of arming, isolating and alienating Turkey is a problematic policy that harms Turkey and the European Union and threatens regional peace and stability,” Bilgic said.
Greece’s actions will also strengthen Turkey’s resolve to defend its rights in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, he said.
