Greece has a strict quarantine regime in force since Saturday – Abroad – News

“It was a difficult decision, but these measures must be implemented in three weeks to overcome the second wave,” the prime minister said in a video conference.

According to the quarantine rules, Greeks will only be able to leave their homes if they have formally made such a request in a mobile phone text message or if they have received permission to call by mobile phone.

Only “essential shops”, including grocery supermarkets and pharmacies, can continue to operate after the quarantine regime starts on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Unlike the previous phase of the quarantine regime, which was announced at the end of March and lasted six weeks, kindergartens and primary schools will continue to operate.

Secondary school students will study at a distance, as university students are already doing according to recently implemented decisions.

The number of new cases of coronavirus recorded each day continues to rise, but the number of people in hospital intensive care units is a major concern for the authorities.

The number of people in hospitals connected to lung ventilators more than doubled in a month from 82 on October 4 to 169 on Wednesday.

“Why make a decision now?” asked the prime minister.

“The number of deaths has increased dramatically in the last five days,” as well as the number of patients in hospitals in intensive care units, the head of government explained.
