Normally, Wimbledon, the third grand slam tournament of the year, would be currently underway. Due to the corona pandemic, the tournament was canceled this year and that is a tough one for many financially.
The Wimbledon organization now comes with a striking and beautiful gesture. “We are in a position to give prize money to all 620 tennis players who, based on their ranking, would be directly on the main draw or qualifying table,” said a statement.
“We are pleased that our insurance policy allows us to recognize the impact of the cancellation of our tournament on players. So we can now transfer them the money as a reward for the hard work they have done.”
A strong signal. The 224 singles who would compete in the qualifications each receive about 14,000 euros, the 256 of the main draw receive 28,000 euros per person. The double players manage with 7,000 euros per player / player. And wheelchair tennis players are not overlooked with around 6,000 euros.
All England Lawn Tennis Club further announced that it is immediately updating the men’s ranking method in singles.
Since 2002, it has only taken into account the performance on the grass tournaments. From the next edition, which will run from June 28 to July 11, 2021, only the ATP ranking will count.
This was already the case with the women.
