Pogacar Gifts Victory to McNulty at Montreal Cycling Grand Prix
Montreal, QC - September 14, 2025 – In a stunning display of sportsmanship, Tadej Pogacar, seemingly poised for a record-breaking third consecutive victory at the Montreal Cycling Grand Prix, instead chose to elevate teammate brandon McNulty to the top of the podium on Sunday afternoon.
The UAE Emirates XRG duo dominated the final 15 kilometers of the race, with Pogacar, the reigning world champion and winner of the Montreal race in both 2022 and 2024, appearing to have the win in hand. However, in a surprising turn, Pogacar ceded the lead to the 27-year-old American McNulty just before the finish line.
“[mcnulty] deserved it,” Pogacar reportedly said after the race (details developing).
The UAE Emirates team controlled the race from start to finish, diligently keeping any breakaway attempts within a manageable two-minute gap. A decisive move came with just over 30 kilometers remaining, when McNulty attacked on Camillien-Houde. only Simmons was able to initially respond, before Pogacar bridged the gap alongside Frenchman Louis Barré of Intermarché-Wanty.
The four riders then worked together, setting the stage for the dramatic finale.
This selfless act by Pogacar underscores the strength and unity within the UAE Emirates XRG team, and highlights a rare moment of camaraderie in the competitive world of professional cycling.
Further updates will be provided as they become available.
