Grand Designs’ Criccieth Home Threatened by Landslip, Stabilization Plans Submitted
Criccieth, Gwynedd – The striking coastal home featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs is facing an “immediate threat” from a landslip and ongoing erosion, prompting its owners to seek planning permission for urgent stabilization work. A boundary wall at Cefn Castell, Criccieth, now overhangs the cliff edge following the incident in February 2024.
Planning documents submitted to Cyngor Gwynedd detail a proposal to secure the property, which has become a local landmark and tourist draw since being offered for rent, contributing ”significantly” to the local economy. The landslip was triggered by water from a land drain, though inquiries to determine ownership of the drain have so far been unsuccessful, according to the Local Democracy Reporting service.
The proposed stabilization measures include driving steel anchors into the cliff face, constructing wire mesh cages filled with stone to create a retaining structure, and placing large stones at the cliff base to dissipate wave energy.
Cefn Castell previously received a Royal Institute of British Architects award for its innovative design. the plans have yet to be discussed by Cyngor Gwynedd officials.
