Grammy: Beyoncé makes history, Yannick Nézet-Séguin wins two trophies

The conductor kicked off the festivities at the inaugural Grammy Awards late in the evening, scooping up the awards for Best Opera Recording (Directing) with Fire Shut Up in My Bones by Terence Blanchard, as well as Best Vocal Solo Album (Pianist) for Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene with singer Renée Fleming.

It’s always special to feel that your work is noticed and recognized in this way.he said shortly after the ceremony, which he missed due to a concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

The artist was also nominated in the categories of best performance by a choir and best classical collection, two distinctions that escaped him.

After a first victory in 2022, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who also conducts the Orchester métropolitain de Montréal and the Metropolitain Opera of New York, can now boast of having received three Grammy awards in his career.

Beyoncé enters the legend

Throughout the 65e Grammy awards, the spotlight was on Beyoncé, who was tipped as the big favorite with nine nominations.

Even host Trevor Noah, who was at the helm of the evening, praised his album Renaissance in his opening monologue, and said that the song Break My Soul had inspired him to quit the hugely popular Daily Show.

The singer did not disappoint her fans: she won no less than 4 awards, breaking the record for the most career trophies with a total of 32 distinctions. Hungarian conductor Georg Solti, who died in 1997, sat atop the Grammy Awards with 31 gramophones for more than 20 years.

The one we call Queen B quickly became famous on Sunday, winning the prizes for best dance/electronic recording (Break My Soul) and Best Traditional R’n’B Performance (Plastic Off the Sofa) at the first ceremony.

She then got her hands on the award for best R’n’B song (Cuff it) and the trophy for best dance/electronic album with Renaissance in the evening, which threw her past the historic 31 award mark in front of a cheering crowd.

Beyoncé made history before she even turned 65e Grammy award. With 9 nominations, for a total of 88 in career, she equaled the record for the most mentions of her husband Jay-Z.

Kendrick Lamar king of rap, Harry Styles king of pop

Rapper Kendrick Lamar, who was hot on the heels of Beyoncé with eight nominations, also had a night of success, winning the Grammy awards for best rap album (Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers), Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song (The Heart Part 5).

The charmer Harry Styles for his part made a double with his album Harry’s Housecollecting the award for pop vocal album, but above all the very prestigious trophy for album of the year, which critics were rather expecting from Adele (30) or Beyoncé (Renaissance).

A close contest between these same two artists was also slated for record of the year; it was finally Lizzo who left with the honors for About Damn Time. In an emotional and colorful speech, she delivered a vibrant tribute to Beyoncé and Prince.

Adele, who has seven Grammy nominations this year, has seen the majority of trophies slip away from her. The British singer nevertheless returned home with the award for best solo performance for Easy on Me.

Moreover, it is impossible to ignore the rise of jazz singer Samara Roy, revealed on Tik Tok, who won the trophy for best new artist. Earlier in the evening, she also picked up the award for best vocal jazz album for Linger Awhile.

Unheard of at the Grammys

Among the firsts at the Grammys on Sunday was the victory of Kim Petras, who became the first trans woman to win the trophy for best pop performance in a duet or group with Sam Smith, for their song Unholy – which earned them praise later in the evening by Madonna, who greeted the artists rebels succession.

A few new trophies have also been added to the 2023 Grammy Awards list, including Best Video Game Score, awarded to Stephanie Economou, for the soundtrack ofAssassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn Of Ragnarok.

The songwriter of the year trophy, also created this year, went to a Canadian: Tobias Jesso Jr., from North Vancouver, was celebrated for his work with Adele, Lizzo and Charli XCX. He also won a second honor for his contribution to Harry’s House of Harry Style, winner of the gramophone of the album of the year.

Another noteworthy moment: American actress Viola Davis joined the select club of artists who won the four major American awards, the Oscar (cinema), the Emmy (television), the Tony (theater) and a Grammy, in the audiobook category (storytelling) for her memoir Finding Me.

Trophies for Michael Bublé and Drake

The first Canadian victory at the 65e Grammy award, however, went to Michael Bublé, who won the trophy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album with Higher during the first gala. This is his fifth career Grammy award, still in this category.

I honestly think it’s the best album I’ve ever made, which makes the recognition of Academy members all the more meaningful.wrote the singer on Twitter shortly after his victory.

Drake also won a fifth Grammy award on Sunday for his contribution to the song Wait for u of Future. The Toronto rapper, however, was beaten by Kendrick Lamar and his song The Heart Part 5 in the category of the best rap title, in which he was cited twice (Churchill Downs by Jack Harlow and Wait for U of Future).

Kaytranada, Xavier Dolan and Arcade Fire leave empty-handed

Disappointment for Montrealer Kaytranada: he who was nominated in the category of best dance/electronic recording for Intimidated with singer HER was beaten at the finish line by Beyoncé and her title Break My Soulthus failing to add a third trophy to his collection.

Director Xavier Dolan, who was in search of a first Grammy prize in his career, will have to be patient. The trophy for best music video, which he hoped to obtain with Easy on Me of Adele, was eventually won by Taylor Swift and her All Too Well: The Short Film.

Arcade Fire was also robbed of a second career Grammy award. The Montreal band lost to the young British group Wet Leg in the category of best alternative music album.

The award for best rock performance also eluded Canadian Bryan Adams; it is rather the folk rock singer Brandi Carlile who won the day.
