GPs take over part of corona care from Amsterdam hospitals | NOW

From Monday, GPs will take over part of the care for convalescing corona patients in hospitals in Amsterdam, so that patients may be able to go home earlier. That leaves internist-infectiologist Marc van der Valk from Amsterdam UMC to it AD know.

“We often see that people who are over the mountain and recover, still need some oxygen for quite some time, while they are otherwise stable,” says Van der Valk in the newspaper.

“If they can save themselves with informal care or minimal home care, they can go home earlier with oxygen.” The patients do have daily contact with their GP.

The Amsterdam hospitals, together with the GPs and home care organizations in the capital, expect to be able to send about fifty patients home early per week. The GPs will then assist them where necessary.

Average admission shortened by two days

According to Van der Valk, an average intake of seven to eight days can be shortened by two days. “That has a major impact: it allows us to take in new patients earlier and to keep regular care up to standard.”

Van der Valk emphasizes that early sending home only takes place with the consent of the GP. “If he has a major outbreak in his neighborhood, we keep the patient here or we look for another solution. The GP must be able to access the care.”

The pressure on Dutch hospitals is still great. On Sunday, a total of nearly 2,300 corona patients were still admitted across the country. Also elsewhere in the country, according to the AD therefore help to relieve the burden on hospitals.
