Geneva Watchmaking Awards Underway: First-Round Voting now Open – The prestigious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) is currently in it’s initial selection phase, with over 300 timepieces vying for recognition. this year’s competition features submissions from 184 brands across 15 categories, representing the pinnacle of watchmaking innovation and craftsmanship.
The first round of voting is exclusively for the members of the GPHG “Academy,” a global collective of over 1,000 watch experts. Time magazine is among the participating media outlets represented within the Academy. Each Academy member can nominate up to six watches per category, influencing which timepieces advance to the next stage. Voting remains open until August 18th.
The preselection results, revealing the 90 watches that will progress, will be announced on September 1st. This initial culling represents a significant reduction from the 302 entries submitted by the participating manufacturers. The GPHG, established in 2000, serves as a yearly benchmark for watchmaking excellence, recognizing both established houses and independent creators. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 9th, 2023, at the Geneva International conference Center (CICG).
The 15 categories include: Mechanical Exception, Ladies, Ladies’ High Mechanical, Tourbillon, Calendar, Chronograph, GMT, Sports, Jewelry, Artistic Crafts, Innovative or Technical, “Petite Aiguille” (watches between CHF 3,000 and CHF 10,000), “Medium” (watches between CHF 10,000 and CHF 25,000), “Grande Complication”, and Iconic watches. The GPHG also features a special prize awarded by the public, with online voting opening after the preselection is announced. The awards aim to promote the art of watchmaking and its heritage, contributing to the economic vitality of the Swiss watch industry, which exports over CHF 22 billion annually, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH).
