Acting Governor of West Flanders Anne Martens decided on Friday that masks are compulsory from Saturday on the dike in every coastal municipality. “I mainly want uniformity,” says Martens.

Thursday’s National Security Council made oral masks mandatory in shopping streets and in all busy places. A number of coastal municipalities such as Blankenberge, Nieuwpoort, Zeebrugge and De Haan then decided to make masks compulsory on the sea dike. After consultation with the coastal mayors, the acting governor decided on Friday to extend the obligation for the entire province. This means that it is mandatory everywhere on the Belgian coast to wear a mouth mask.
“This is a provincial decision that was taken after a video conference with the mayors on Friday afternoon. Not everyone was planning to make oral masks mandatory on the dike, but above all I want clarity and uniformity. ” The provincial decree is still being prepared and is expected to come into effect on Saturday.
On Thursday, some mayors indicated that they had no intention of doing so. Middelkerke Jean-Marie Dedecker (LDD) said “he wants to let people live a little bit more.” He was not present at the meeting and did not send a replacement.
