[１日 ロイター] – Governor Newsom of California announced the nomination of LaFonza Butler, an executive at a political funding organization, to replace Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein from California, who died on September 28 at the age of 90. Democrats will maintain the majority in the Senate.
Butler has been an executive with Emily’s List, which supports Democratic women candidates who support abortion rights.
Newsom said she would be the first Black and openly lesbian senator. She is also the only sitting Black woman in the Senate, and only the third in U.S. history. She will serve until January 2025, which was Feinstein’s term.
Mr. Butler has served as an advisor to Vice President Harris and is also the head of California’s largest labor union.
