Government of Canada invests in laboratories to support science and research in Canada

April 15, 2021 – Hamilton, Ontario – Public Services and Procurement Canada

Strengthen research excellence in priority areas for the benefit of Canadians

With Laboratories Canada, the Government of Canada provides innovative, world-class collaborative facilities for federal scientists to keep pace with the evolution of science, now and in the future.

Today, the Honorable Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, announced an investment of $ 58.9 million to support new laboratories for the centers of expertise on advanced materials in the National Research Council of Canada and Natural Resources Canada in Mississauga and Hamilton, Ontario. The new facilities will work collaboratively to create and apply Accelerated Materials Discovery Platforms (PDAMs), a new approach to materials discovery and development for the clean energy sector, including increasing their production and marketing. This work will help Canada meet its emissions reduction targets and grow the manufacturing and clean energy sectors.

Construction of the Hamilton laboratories is expected to be completed in May 2021, while construction of the Mississauga laboratories is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.

The Laboratories Canada strategy aims to provide federal scientists with state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly and collaborative facilities to position Canada at the forefront of new discoveries and achieve research priorities, while supporting jobs at the Canada. Additional Laboratories Canada sites across the country will be announced in the coming months.
