Google News Summaries: AI Reduces Need to Click Links to Articles

Google‘s smartphone submission is rolling out a new feature, dubbed “summaries,” designed to streamline how users consume news. This innovation aims to reduce the necessity for users to click through to external links for the full story.

Rather of presenting traditional links within the Discover feed, the Google app will now display AI-generated summaries of news content sourced from specialized publications. While these summaries will include small logos identifying the original news outlets, the convenience of a concise overview may lead users to bypass visiting the actual news sites.

This new functionality, currently appearing for select topics within the Discover feed, indicates that Google is in a testing phase before a wider official release. The introduction of AI-powered summaries within the Google app follows similar features in Google search results and could potentially impact the organic traffic reaching news websites.

The feature has been implemented in both the Android and iOS versions of the Google application. This progress comes amid complaints from several prominent U.S. publications regarding a noticeable decline in their website traffic after Google began incorporating AI summaries.

What are your thoughts on AI-generated news summaries? Do you think this will fundamentally change how we access information, or is it just another evolution in digital content consumption?
