Google Maps Music Controls Return After Glitch
App Users Frustrated by Disappearing Media Playback
Google Maps has confirmed a widespread issue that removed music playback controls for Spotify and YouTube Music from its Android app. The feature, which allowed users to manage music directly within the navigation interface, had temporarily vanished, sparking user concern.
Media Playback Feature Vanishes
The media control functionality within Google Maps, previously accessible via “Show media playback controls” in settings, allowed users to see album art, artist names, and playback buttons. Users could also access a “Browse” button for music searches or quick shortcuts to open their preferred music apps.
The issue became apparent in Google Maps versions 25.28 (stable) and 25.29 (beta). Reports indicate the problem persisted for about a week, with users unable to find the playback options or the “Default Media App” setting.
Many speculated the disappearance was a temporary bug, especially since the feature remained active on the iOS version of Google Maps. This led to speculation about a permanent removal.

Google Confirms Bug, Promises Swift Fix
On July 21st, Google officially addressed the situation. A company representative confirmed to a tech publication that the vanishing controls were indeed a bug.
“This problem is a bug. And the team is accelerating to be able to return to normal use soon.”

This confirmation is a welcome development for Android users who rely on seamless music integration during their drives. The company is reportedly prioritizing the fix, aiming to restore the functionality quickly.
The discontinuation of the “Assistant Driving Mode” earlier last year had already impacted the way users interacted with media in Google Maps. While Google stated its focus was on improving convenient and safe access to media controls, especially for drivers needing to concentrate on the road, the recent glitch caused significant disruption.
This situation highlights the growing reliance on integrated in-app features for entertainment while navigating. According to Statista, the global digital music streaming market generated over $30 billion in revenue in 2023, underscoring the importance of such features for user experience (Statista 2023).

Android users can anticipate the return of their familiar music controls within the Google Maps application in the near future, bringing convenience back to their journeys.
