Google Home Update Streamlines Smart Home Control

Google is rolling out a fresh update for its smart home ecosystem in Spring 2025. The upgrades introduce practical enhancements designed to make managing multiple devices and customising controls simpler than before.

Enhanced Favorites & Customizable Tiles

A primary innovation involves the “Favorites” section, which will gain customization options based on device type. Users can now access tailored views for their preferred smartwatches or tablets. The update also adds active tiles for specific rooms.

Automations Driven by Behavior

A major shift is coming to Google Home with enhanced automation. Android users in the U.S. will soon experience public testing of a new automation screen, simplifying scene and routine creation. The update will introduce routines that trigger based on user behavior, not just sensor data.

These new “Home” and “Away” routines are triggered by activities. For instance, if someone plays music or watches TV, the system recognizes they are home. This then automatically initiates customized scenarios, such as turning on lights or disarming the security system.

Camera Improvements and New Device Support

The update brings improvements to camera features; users can now double-click to skip recordings by ten seconds. This should greatly improve how recordings are viewed, reducing the time spent searching for specific moments.

New device support is coming with this spring update. The Nest Protect smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector will be officially supported. Additionally, Matter, including devices like the Aqara Smart Lock U300, will be compatible.

According to a 2024 study, smart home device adoption continues to rise, with 57% of U.S. households owning at least one such product (Statista).
