Google Home App for iOS Receives Major Redesign, Gemini Integration begins Rolling Out
cupertino, CA – September 27, 2025 – A notable update to the Google Home app for iOS is now reaching users in a Public Preview, bringing a complete interface redesign and integrating Google’s Gemini AI assistant with a new “Ask Home” feature. The rollout marks the beginning of a broader overhaul aimed at simplifying smart home control and introducing more conversational interactions.
The update introduces Gemini’s capabilities directly into the Home app, allowing users to interact with their smart home devices using natural language. Initial functionality focuses on basic device search and displaying existing automations.while more advanced features are currently unavailable – Google informs users that “ASK HOME is not yet ready for your home, but you get a notification as soon as it is” – a key upcoming feature is “Gemini live,” which will keep the microphone active after the initial query, enabling follow-up questions without repeating “hey Google.” The microphone will automatically deactivate after a period of inactivity or through manual termination of the conversation.
Visually, the app boasts a new icon featuring gradient colors inspired by Google’s “G” and Gemini branding. The interface has been streamlined into three core tabs: Home, Activity, and Automations. the Home tab utilizes swipeable top tabs for speedy access to favorites, devices, cameras, lights, and Wi-Fi settings. Users will also find a new “ASK Home” circle for managing home/away status, a “Plus” button for device addition, and an account menu for settings.
Further enhancements include the ability for users with active Voice Match to search and display history from compatible cameras on smart displays. Google also confirms Gemini will be accessible to all household members, including guests.
The redesign is currently expanding to users participating in the Public Preview on iOS. Google anticipates a full launch of all features on October 1, with a formal announcement expected at that time. A release date for the Android version of the updated app has not yet been announced, but is anticipated in the coming weeks.
