Google Traffic Declines for German Companies as AI Integration Shifts Search Behavior
A recent analysis by the Munich-based online marketing agency Seocracy reveals that German companies are experiencing an average 7% decrease in traffic originating from Google search. The study, based on anonymized data from over 100 company websites totaling nearly 70 million visits, points to a shift in how users access details online.
While traffic from AI-powered tools like ChatGPT is growing, it remains a relatively small contributor to overall website visits. Seocracy’s data shows a 7.4-fold year-over-year increase in ChatGPT-driven traffic – rising from 0.08% to 0.66% – but this still represents a minor share of total traffic.
The primary driver of the decline in Google traffic appears to be Google’s own AI initiatives, specifically the rollout of “Overview with AI” in March 2024. This feature provides direct answers to search queries within the Google search results page, reducing the need for users to click through to external websites. Initial traffic drops reached as high as 20% following the launch, stabilizing around the current 7% decline.
Despite the rise of generative AI, ChatGPT currently lacks the broad reach and relevance among the general population compared to Google. Seocracy founder Julian Dziki notes that ChatGPT is more popular with tech-savvy users, while google continues to dominate commercial search queries. Approximately 14.5% of Google’s 14 billion daily searches are purchase-related, a figure vastly higher than the per-thousand level observed with ChatGPT.
Rather of facing competition, Google is actively integrating AI functions directly into its search experience. The company is currently testing an “AI Mode” in the US, allowing users to interact with search through a chat interface while still accessing customary search results. This move signals a convergence of conversational AI and traditional search methods.
From an SEO perspective, Seocracy suggests this advancement requires adaptation rather than a complete overhaul of strategies. Core SEO principles – relevance, content structure, and technical quality – remain crucial, but must be optimized for presentation within AI-powered search results.
Ultimately, the analysis suggests Google is poised to strengthen its position through AI integration, rather than being seriously challenged by ChatGPT,leveraging its existing reach, user base, and extensive data integration.
