After Arizona and Florida last week, several other states are on the verge of allowing professional sport to return to their territory, as New York, California and Texas made announcements to this effect on Monday.
Of those three states, Texas is the closest to the return of professional athletes, having previously announced a date. In fact, seven sports – basketball, baseball, car racing, football, golf, softball and tennis – can resume on May 31 if they present a health plan to the authorities and it is accepted. Hockey seems to be excluded from this measure for the moment.
On the California side, Governor Gavin Newsom has indicated that he hopes to allow the sport to return in the first week of June. However, everything must be done in accordance with “very strict conditions”.
On the New York State side, no date has been put forward, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo has asked the teams to prepare for the return without supporters. The politician also argued that his government will do what it can to make things easier.
“I encouraged the big sports teams to plan the comeback without the fans, but the games will be able to be broadcast,” he said during a press briefing. In all cases, sporting events must be presented behind closed doors. Hockey, basketball, baseball, football, anyone can come back. We will be a ready, willing and competent partner. ”
