Not an ordinary map, it takes patience to a high degree of patience to put the pieces together into a detailed map. That’s how astrophotographer JP Metsavainio took 12 years to create map of the Milky Way galaxy.
Starting in 2009, Metsavainio started this ambitious and grandiose project. He put together a 1.7-megapixel mosaic of the Milky Way consisting of 234 individual images all stitched together.
As seen in the image below, the Finnish astrophotographer gave birth to an extraordinary work, a map of the Milky Way galaxy which consists of about 20 million out of 200 billion in total in that galaxy.

To create one image in the span of 12 years, Metsavainio explains why. He photographed most of the mosaics as individual compositions and published them as independent works of art.
Technically, to photograph the stars in space, Metsavainio uses different approaches from each other, one of which is the camera used. There are celestial bodies that need more exposure than others, because they appear dimmer and are harder to see. For example, a supernova remnant requires more than 60 hours of exposure.

In all, Metsavainio took 1,250 hours during those 12 years to produce map of the Milky Way galaxy this.
