The Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, located in Guimarães, is one of the most visited museums in the country during the last decade, as well as the Guimarães Castle, in terms of monuments, announced this Wednesday, the Regional Directorate of Northern Culture. .
In a statement, that entity points to a considerable growth of Guimarães Castle (up 8.9% over the previous decade) and the impressive 460,000 visitors of the Paço dos Duques, during 2019 alone.
The two monuments together can overcome the most visited monument in the country, the Porto Cathedral, which this year reached the mark of 740,846 visitors.
In a statement, the organization said that all the museums and monuments under management of the Northern Directorate of Culture reached an absolute record in the number of visitors, with 2,232,154 entries, representing an increase of 22.9% compared to the previous year. with the previous year.
Of the total number of visitors registered last year, 1,365,238 entries were foreign visitors (61.1% of total visitors), mainly from Spain, Brazil, France, England, USA, Germany and Italy.
Considering this evolution as “extremely positive”, António Ponte, regional director of Northern Culture, explains that the growth seen in recent years is due to “a reinforcement of the strategy of articulated and networked work throughout the territory”.
On the other hand, points out António Ponte, “several conservation and restoration projects of the built heritage have been developed, aiming to ensure the protection and enhancement of the buildings, always with the objective of returning them to the communities to which they belong, with new models of public enjoyment. “
