European health experts said, Thursday, that thousands of Covid-19 patients suffer from severe and debilitating symptoms that last for months after the first episode of the disease, which leads to significant social, health and economic consequences.

When issuing an indicative report led by the World Health Organization on the case, often referred to as “long-term Covid” or “post-Covid syndrome”, the experts added that nearly one in ten people with the disease feel fatigued 12 weeks after their infection, and many suffer. Symptoms last much longer than this.

“It’s a situation that can be very debilitating,” said Martin McKee, a professor at the European Observatory of Health Systems and Policy who led the report. Those who suffer from it talk about an overlapping variety of symptoms … (such as) chest and muscle pain, fatigue, shortness of breath … and brain distortion and many other symptoms ».

Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said that having a long-term COVID-19 could have “serious social, economic, health and occupational consequences.”

“We must listen to those suffering from post-Covid symptoms if we want to understand the long-term consequences of Covid-19 and recover from it … This is a clear priority for the World Health Organization and it should be the same for every health authority,” he said.
