Giro d’Italia loses big name again: João Almeida tests positive for corona cycling

The 23-year-old Almeida occupied fourth place in the general classification and also wore the youth jersey. On Wednesday he already said that he was not completely fit.

“Since the beginning I did not feel well, I had not yet recovered one hundred percent from Tuesday. That was a really tough ride, and I knew right away that my legs weren’t at their normal level. I just didn’t know if I just had that feeling or everyone else too. Well, it turned out I was alone. There are still three tough days and a time trial. It’s not over yet,” Almeida kept hope.

Earlier this Giro, big names such as Tom Dumoulin, Romain Bardet, Miguel Angel Lopez and Simon Yates also stepped down.

Almeida wore the pink jersey for no less than fifteen days in 2020. He eventually finished fourth, behind winner Tao Geoghegan Hart, Jai Hindley and Wilco Kelderman. Last year, the Portuguese finished sixth in the Tour of Italy. He has so far recorded seven victories, including overall victories in the Tour de Pologne and Luxembourg.
