Arrests Mount After Disorder Erupts in Northern Ireland
Authorities in Northern Ireland are grappling with the aftermath of recent unrest, with multiple arrests made in connection to the incidents. The disturbances, which began last week, have prompted investigations and a heightened police presence in affected areas.
Recent Arrests and Charges
Five further arrests have been made by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Among the new arrests is a 25-year-old man held in connection with an arson attack at the Larne Leisure Centre. A 13-year-old girl faces charges of rioting. The leisure center sustained significant damage during the incident.
Police arrested the man after searching a house in Larne over the weekend. They suspect him of conspiracy to commit arson, intending to endanger life. The disorder initially unfolded in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, following an alleged sexual assault.
Two 14-year-old boys, who spoke to a court via a Romanian interpreter, have been charged with attempted rape. A peaceful protest on Monday was followed by attacks on police and properties inhabited by ethnic minorities. The PSNI described the scenes as “racist thuggery.”
Widespread Unrest
The disturbances in the Co. Antrim town stretched across several nights, spreading to other areas, including Portadown, Larne, Belfast, Carrickfergus, Derry, and Coleraine. As of Monday morning, police had made 28 arrests. They anticipate making more in the coming days and weeks.
