Concert on Gilberto Gil’s 80th birthday
He celebrates his 80th birthday with JazzBaltica. Festival director Nils Landgren thinks it’s an honor that he’s coming at all: “He just said yes. He wanted to play here, Jazz Baltica has a good reputation. That’s also a sign that he’s interested in a festival like this and even celebrating his birthday here. I mean, maybe when you’re 80, you just want to celebrate.” It was celebrated. with the audience.
Gilberto Gil did not come alone: 13 family members are on stage with him. His family means everything to him, says Gilberto Gil. “I feel great when the whole family is together. We brought them here. Some of them didn’t even know Germany, the Baltic Sea and the festival. All of that is balm for my soul.”
For some family members the first appearance together
For some members of the family it is the first joint appearance, says Gilberto Gil happily. “Some of them have been playing with me for quite a while, for example my sons Bam and grandson Jose who accompany me on guitar, or my other son Joao who plays drums. But for some it’s the first time that we get together like that. Everyone loves music, but performing with the band, with their father or grandfather, that’s the first time.”
Gilberto Gil has been awarded gold and platinum several times, and he has sold a total of four million records. He also achieved a great deal as Minister of Education, and young people were particularly important to him. “They are part of my life,” he says. “My songs describe different aspects of my life, how I see life, take it and appreciate it. Of course children are part of it, so it’s very natural for me that they are part of the job with me.” Even if Gilberto Gil has already achieved a lot in his life: life on stage is far from over for him.
