Gijón has been selected to be part of the initiative ‘Intelligent Cities Challenge’, an action of the European Comission whose objective is to promote digital transformation based on environmental sustainability and green and digital growth. It thus becomes the only city in northern Spain present in the project and joins the 100 European cities that have also been chosen.
It is an opportunity to work and share experiences to cope with the pandemic and rebuild the economy towards sustainable green and digital growth that improve public services, employment, social services, quality of life and allowing the creation of new opportunities for business communities. In addition, it will have the support and advice of experts in the challenges in which Gijón turns.
The candidacy has been backed by the Principality and by the technological fabric Township. In it, the advances that have been produced in the city after having participated in the ‘Digital Cities Challenge’ were exposed, the project to which the new network wants to give continuity and where initiatives such as’ Gijon-In ‘and the spaces’ arise. The Commission European has valued, therefore, the progress and interest of the city in digital transformation, in energy efficiency, in innovation and industry 4.0 policies, in sustainable growth, in the circular economy, in digitization and in supporting digital entrepreneurship. Also the commitment to ICT technologies and the integration of the citizen as a visible part of an intelligent and connected ecosystem.
