Giant Asteroid Passing Near Earth

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

a Asteroid a giant the size of the National Monument (Monas) is reported to have passed near the Earth.

The asteroid, which has the name 2013 YD38, has a length of 104 meters and passes at a distance of 5.6 million kilometers from Earth.

Although the distance seems far, the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) classifies it as an object that is close to Earth (NEO), which means the object is at a distance below 1.3 astronomical units (1 astronomical unit = 149.6 million kilometers).

According to NASA, any asteroid 140 meters wide or larger could be devastating if it hit Earth. But asteroid 2013 YD48 won’t pass close enough to Earth so there’s nothing to worry about.

Reporting from the NASA website, the asteroid 2013 YD48 passed on January 11 universal time or UTC (7 hours earlier than WIB), but it was not explained in detail the exact time the asteroid would pass.

Asteroid YD48 is not the only one that will pass close to Earth in early 2022.

Asteroid 2021 YK, which is smaller in size only 12 meters, flew across the Earth with a distance of 189 thousand kilometers on 2 January.

In addition, on January 5, the asteroid 2021 YQ, which is the size of an airplane, also crossed Earth at a distance of 2.14 million kilometers, as quoted from The Independent.

Furthermore, in the coming week, a giant asteroid will also pass by Earth. This 1 kilometer long asteroid will pass Earth on January 19 at around 04.51 WIB.

Although very large, the asteroid that moves at a speed of 19.56 kilometers per second is called not potentially dangerous.

Because this asteroid glides at a distance of 1.93 million kilometers from Earth or the equivalent of 5.15 times the distance from Earth to the Moon, so there is no potential for a collision with Earth.
