KOMPAS.com – A giant asteroid will approach Earth on Tuesday (18/1/2022) at 21.51 UTC or 19 January 2022 at 04.51 WIB.

Asteroid measuring 1.1 kilometers, named (7485) 1994 PC1 is known to be approaching Earth at a speed of 43,754 miles per hour, with a distance of 1.93 million kilometers.

Nonetheless, for sure asteroid This giant will not hit Earth, even though it is categorized as a “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid”.

Potentially dangerous is used by astronomers to refer to a Near-Earth Object (NEO) or an object approaching Earth with a large size that could have an impact in the event of an impact.

Reported from Forbes, Sunday (16/1/2022), the detection of this asteroid makes (7485) 1994 PC1 the largest asteroid known to approach Earth in 2022.

Asteroid (7482) 1994 PC1 is classified as an Apollo asteroid, the class of objects named after the asteroid 1862 Apollo.

This celestial body was first discovered in 1994 by astronomer Robert McNaught at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia.

according to Science Alert, Wednesday (5/1/2022), scientists traced it back, and found pictures until September 1974.

In fact, asteroid (7482) 1994 PC1 has an orbital arc of only 47 years, which is the distance between observations in our night sky.

Previously, this asteroid had approached Earth on January 17, 1933, with a distance of 1.1 million kilometers. It is then estimated to be within the same distance as Earth on January 18, 2105.

Orbit asteroid

The asteroid has an orbit larger than Earth’s orbit around the Sun and its path crosses Earth’s path.

Meanwhile (7482) 1994 PC1 orbits the Sun every 572 days and its path sometimes crosses the path of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

The closest asteroid’s flight path in 2022 is (7482) PC1 1994 which has come to Earth since 1933 and for the next 200 years.

So, astronomers are very familiar with the nature of this asteroid and not be a dangerous thing for them.

How to see asteroids

Meanwhile, the party in charge of operating space flights where the spacecraft passes near other objects, Flyby, said that they provide opportunities for amateur astronomers and stargazers to see asteroids.

With a speed of 43,754 miles per hour this asteroid will look similar to a star.

You can watch it online when the Virtual Telescope Project streams it live at 20:00 UTC on January 18, 2022.

At magnitude 10, the asteroid would be too dim to see with the naked eye or binoculars.

But if you have at least a 6-inch backyard telescope, you should be able to catch a glimpse of it as it darts past, according to Eddie Irizarry at EarthSky.org.

Explanation NASA

An independent agency from the US that focuses on the space program, and aeronautical and space research (NASA) has identified the giant object.

They did so at the behest of the US Congress.

Today, there are more advanced sky surveys (such as NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) opening up an era in which more and more asteroids are discovered, and their orbits mapped.

According to NASA, the currently known number of asteroids is 1,113,527. NASA said much smaller asteroids were discovered when they were very close to Earth.
