Ghostly phenomenon: “Dust devil” on Mars – Science

These pictures are an absolute rarity: raw images from NASA show an impressive “dust devil” – and that in the middle of Mars.

NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has recorded rare images of the hostile desert planet. Such weather phenomena give insight into the seasonal changes on the red planet.

The atmosphere is heating up

Atmospheric circulation occurs during summer because the atmosphere heats up unevenly. If the surface air moves upwards, dust devils could develop on the ground, writes the atmospheric researcher Claire Newman from Aeolis Research on Mars Exploration blog entry.

Although the phenomenon itself is a common one, so far it has mainly been the traces that have been seen.
