Ghost of Tsushima would not initially be a samurai game

It’s finally here: the (as far as known) last PS4 exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, is in stores. We hope that you can have a lot of fun at this moment. Developer Sucker Punch took the opportunity to look back on the track they took before the game was finally on the shelves. A new message on from PlayStation Blog looks back.

As it turns out, Ghost of Tsushima actually started as a completely different game from what it ended up being. After the last inFamous games, Sucker Punch decided to make a new kind of game in a large open world with melee combat. However, the setting had not yet been established at all. It was thought to make the game revolve around pirates, the Scottish exile Rob Roy MacGregor and the three musketeers. Brian Fleming from Sucker Punch speaking:

“All these were considered — but we kept coming back to feudal Japan and telling the story of a samurai warrior. Then one fateful fall afternoon we found a historical account of the Mongol invasion of Tsushima in 1274, and the entire vision clicked into place.”

The team also had to break with their inFamous games to build a whole new world with new systems. There, too, the game experienced a lot of changes during development.

“At times, the task seemed impossible. The game got away from us a little bit — it felt like we were wrestling an octopus. We had trouble just keeping track of the state of the game. Was it playing better with yesterday’s new changes? It’s a simple question to ask, but hard to answer unless you can cancel all your meetings for a week and play through the game.”

The game has finally reached its destination and we can say that Sucker Punch succeeded in their design. We were a fan, so be sure to read our review once after. Ghost of Tsushima is available now.
