In September, GGD Groningen will again organize a vaccination campaign against meningococcal disease ACWY for young people of about fourteen years of age.

The campaign started in March, but due to the corona crisis, not all young people were able to come for a shot.

Young people from the province of Groningen who qualify for this vaccination will receive a personal invitation letter in the mail. Due to the corona measures, it is important that vaccination candidates come at the right time and in the right place to get the shot, because it is not possible to move the appointment. Wearing a mouth cap is mandatory at the injection location.

Meningococcal disease is a serious illness caused by a bacterium called the meningococcus. This bacterium can cause blood poisoning and meningitis. There are different types of meningococci, the best known of which are A, C, W and Y.

Research shows that from the age of 14 you are more likely to have the meningococcus in your throat or nose, the national government reports. Young people aged 14 to 20 also spread the bacteria easily. That is why all 14-year-olds are offered the shot.
