Getting to Know Guillain Barre Syndrome, A Rare Side Effect of the AstraZeneca Vaccine

Jakarta

Guillain Barre Syndrome (gee-YAH-buh-RAY) is a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the system nerve. Quoted from Mayoclinic, the first symptoms are usually weakness and tingling.

These symptoms can quickly spread and eventually paralyze the entire body. In its most severe form, Guillain Barre Syndrome is a medical emergency. Most people with the condition must be hospitalized to receive treatment.

The exact cause of Guillain Barre Syndrome is unknown. But two-thirds of patients reported symptoms of infection in the previous six weeks.

Guillain-Barre syndrome often begins with tingling and weakness starting in the legs and spreading to the upper body and arms.

In about 10 percent of people with the disorder, symptoms begin in the arms or face. As Guillain Barre Syndrome progresses, muscle weakness can progress to paralysis.

Here are the signs and symptoms of Guillain Barre Syndrome:

  • Needling sensation in fingers, toes, ankles or wrists
  • Weakness in the legs that spreads to the upper body
  • Shaky walking or inability to walk or climb stairs
  • Difficulty with facial movements, including speaking, chewing or swallowing
  • Double vision or inability to move the eyes
  • Severe pain that may feel sore, like stabbing or cramping and may be worse at night
  • Difficulty with bladder or bowel function control
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Difficult to breathe

People with Guillain Barre Syndrome usually experience the most significant weakness within two weeks of symptoms starting.

In addition, there is no known cure for Guillain Barre Syndrome, but some treatments can relieve symptoms and reduce the duration of the disease.

Recently the European Drug Authority (EMA) added GBS to the list of side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine. There were 883 cases of GBS out of 592 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine administered worldwide, data as of July 2021.

Even so, the side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine, including nerve damage, are in the very rare category. It is certain that the benefits outweigh the risks after the AstraZeneca vaccine.
