The body of Manuel Luís Magalhães, 60, was cremated this Saturday at the funeral complex in Elvas. The mathematics teacher, who taught at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, in Portimão, could not resist the complications of Covid-19 and died at the Hospital de Faro, on Friday. Between data and statistical analysis, in a closed country, there are lives that are lost, there are names and faces for the tragedy.
The professor is said to have been infected by a colleague, who returned from a Carnival vacation in northern Italy, the area of the country that has become the epicenter of the spread of the virus. The teacher also contacted the Directorate-General for Health, and was told that, having no symptoms, she could continue to teach.
It was only after this teacher’s 17-year-old daughter was diagnosed on the 8th, becoming the first case of infection with the new coronavirus in the Algarve region, that the mother was tested. It was confirmed that the teacher was also a carrier of Covid-19 and the school was closed – at the time it had not yet been decreed to close all schools – to prevent further transmissions.
For Manuel Luís Magalhães it was too late. The teacher, who lived in Lagoa but had roots in Vila Nova de Gaia, took the test and the results were made public on the 12th. CM he found out, the professor already had a history of some health problems, namely cardiac issues. In the space of just over two weeks, he lost the fight against this new coronavirus. He was already in intensive care at Hospital de Faro when the body gave way.
