Get to know the Condor Cluster, Supercomputer Designed from 1,760 PlayStation 3

KOMPAS.com – The United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) developed supercomputer 33rd largest in the world. Interestingly this device is made from 1,760 consoles Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3).

Supercomputer located in Rome, New Yok is called the Condor Cluster and is used by Air Force centers across the US. These devices are deployed for radar enhancement, pattern recognition, satellite image processing and artificial intelligence research.

The Condor Cluster project has been started since 2006, when the price of the PS3 was around US$400 or around Rp. 5.9 million (current exchange rate). This price is more affordable than devices that offer similar technology which are priced at US $ 10,000 per unit or currently worth Rp. 148 million.

The total PS3 used in this supercomputer cost about 2 million US dollars or the equivalent of Rp. 29.6 billion. According to AFRL’s Director of High Power Computing, Mark Barnell, that’s only 5-10 percent of the cost of the same system built with computer parts.

Besides being more efficient, PS3-based supercomputers are also superior in terms of energy efficiency. Sony’s console is said to consume only 10 percent of the power required supercomputer class.

AFRL chose PS3 because it supports Linux installation. Different from PlayStation newer generations like the PS4 don’t support that operating system.

In addition to the PS3, the Condor Cluster supercomputer is also equipped with 168 graphics processing units installed separately and 84 connected to direct system traffic.

The fastest interactive computer in the US Department of Defense

As a supercomputer, this Condor Cluster has a large capacity, and is able to offer speeds of up to 500 trillion operations floating point per second (TFLOPS).

Thanks to that speed, the Condor Cluster is billed as the fastest interactive computer in the entire US Department of Defense.

The speed of the Condor Cluster supercomputer can analyze very high resolution images in a short time.

The PS3 console used in this supercomputer also plays a role in increasing its speed because of the console’s capable graphics capabilities as summarized KompasTekno from PhysMonday (20/6/2022).

That way, supercomputer algorithms can identify objects flying in space better than previous computers.
