Get to know the characteristics of allergies and how to care for children’s skin

AKURAT.CO, Unlike adults, children have thinner and sensitive skin with underdeveloped immunity so they are more susceptible to disorders that can lead to allergies.

Skin and genital specialist, dr. Armansjah Dara Sjahruddin said that children’s skin layers are thinner than adult skin. The function of the skin as a body protector is also not optimal because the skin is thinner and also because the child’s immune system is still developing.

“Skin disorders that often occur in infants and children, such as atopic dermatitis, which makes the skin rash red, scaly, blistered and itchy,” said Dara.

Children can also experience seborrheic dermatitis, where the skin looks scaly and dandruff appears due to peeling skin. In newborns, this occurs due to the influence of androgen hormones that have not disappeared. This is normal and does not cause itching or pain, and is not contagious.

Other disorders include pyoderma, piliary keratosis, aka skin with scabies.

This more sensitive and vulnerable skin makes skin disorders in babies and children common, for example a rash from using diapers or from touching the hands of adults around them.

The risk of diaper rash can be reduced by changing the diaper properly. Clean the diaper area with water, clean the child’s genital area from front to back. Change diapers immediately after the child has a bowel movement or urination.

“The baby’s skin is not yet perfect, so germs from the hands can easily enter, causing a rash,” said Dara in an online discussion written on Saturday (23/1/2021).

Therefore, Dara reminded parents or caregivers to provide additional protection for children’s skin in reducing the risk of irritation and allergies.
