Signs and Symptoms of Scrub Typhus
Symptoms of scrub typhus will usually appear within 10 days after you are bitten. Signs and symptoms that may appear include:
- Fever and chills
- Headache
- Body aches and muscle aches
- A dark, scab-like area at the site of the chigger bite (also known as eschar)
- Mental changes, from confusion to coma

There is no vaccine available to prevent scrub typhus. You can reduce your risk from scrub typhus by avoiding contact with infected chiggers.
When traveling to areas where scrub typhus is common, avoid areas that have a lot of vegetation and shrubbery as these are places where chiggers are more likely to be found.
If you will be spending time outdoors:
- Use the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) containing DEET or other active ingredients listed for use against chiggers, on exposed skin and clothing.
- Reapply insect repellent according to directions.
- Do not spray repellent on skin under clothing.
- If you use sunscreen, apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent.
If you have a baby or child:
- Dress your child in clothes that cover arms and legs, or cover cots, strollers and carriers with mosquito nets.
- Do not apply insect repellent to children’s hands, eyes or mouth or to wounds or irritated skin.
- In children: Spray insect repellent on your hands and then apply to the child’s face.
Treat clothing and equipment with 0.5% permethrin or purchase items treated with permethrin. Permethrin will kill chiggers and can be used to treat boots, clothing, and camping gear. Do not use permethrin products directly on the skin. Because this product is meant for clothing.
