Germany to start pilot project with hydrogen train in 2024 | News

The pilot project will take place in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany, railway company Deutsche Bahn and train manufacturer Siemens announced Monday.

The hydrogen train will run for a year between Tübingen, Horb and Pforzheim. The hydrogen will be generated with green electricity, it says, and the train would have a range of 600 kilometers.

Deutsche Bahn wants to make the railways climate neutral for the next thirty years. Among other things, 1,300 diesel trains must be replaced for this.

Hydrogen is considered a green alternative to diesel trains in places where the railway lines are not yet electrified. In Germany, this involves about 13,000 kilometers of track, or 39 percent of the network. But there are other possibilities, such as battery trains, hybrid trains (batteries and fuel) or the use of ‘eco-diesel’.
