Germany seizes three Gazprom LNG ships

Germany has seized three Gazprom LNG tankers, Market Insider reported, as Europe faces an energy crisis.

Dynagas LNG Partners said Germany’s control of the vessels would continue “for an indefinite period of time”. Two of the vessels, Amur and Ob, were leased by Gazprom until 2028. The third vessel, Chista Energia, until 2026.

Germany took control of the German arm of Gazprom in April to guarantee energy supplies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Gazprom Germania has since been renamed Securing Energy for Europe.

Last week, Berlin considered expropriating parts of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that are on German territory and connecting it to an LNG terminal. Liquefied natural gas, especially from the US, is in high demand as Europe looks for alternatives to Russian energy.

But the situation in Europe remains dire. Last Thursday, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck announced that the country was now in the “alert” phase of its gas emergency plan, signaling that businesses and households should reduce consumption and that the government foresees a long-term risk of supply shortages.

And on Tuesday, International Energy Agency Executive Director Faith Birol told Bloomberg that Europe should be prepared to cut its natural gas consumption by up to 30 percent if Russia completely shuts off supplies.
